One of the primary causes of the decline of sport in Nigeria present is the lack of a well-organized management. Many solutions are being offered by patriotic and concerned Nigerians every day to help us out of the mess. One of these solutions is this book titled “Modern trends in the Management and Administration of Sports”. It was written by Professor Dr. Joseph Awoyinfa, a lecturer in the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, Nigeria; a researcher and consultant to the educational sector. I was who was invited by the author and the university to evaluate the book after it was released to the public on the evening of December 4 on the 4th of December, 2008 in Nigeria.
According to Awoyinfa is a fact all over the world that sports are becoming a topic of reference that cannot be left out across all areas of the economy and other spheres of existence. The text is comprised of 16 chapters. Chapter 1 is known as “the idea of management in sports”. In this chapter, Awoyinfa states that management is a term that means diverse concepts to various people at different times, creating a myriad of definitions. He states that management can be called an art science and a person an activity, a discipline and process.
The author explains that as a form of art, sports management is about the execution of sports’ organizational duties and tasks with the help of people. As a science, it is all about establishing a sports philosophy and laws, theories, procedures, and guidelines.
In the context of an organization according to his definition, sports management can be described as the process of establishing formal structures and a structure with a goal goals, objectives as well as functions and tasks.

Awoyinfa says that since the beginning in the century of 20th, authors on the subject of sports management and business theory have been developing various theories on how to manage personnel and work more effectively and efficiently.
The author explains that the three principal types of management theories include the classical, the human-behavioural and integrative. According to Awoyinfa communication is an essential aspect of the organisation’s effectiveness as organisations can’t function efficiently in the absence of communication among their members. “Since communications are the driving spirit of an organization and its absence can cause organizations slow down,” asserts this author.
In chapters 12-16, Awoyinfa X-rays concepts such as development and organisational changes in management of sports; leadership in management and administration of sports in the management and administration for soccer coaches teaching health and human kinetics in colleges and schools; as well as the administration and organization of schools at different educational levels.
